Thailand’s variety of colourful ponlamai fruits help brighten up Bangkok’s busy streets. At almost every street corner cooling in ice filled carts you will find ripe yellow pineapples, cool red watermelons and bright orange papayas. The other less familiar Ponlamai fruits on street carts are sour green (unripe) mango and guava (farang fruit).
Vendors slice the fruits (Ponlamai) and serve in bags with a skewer to stick them with. Each come with a choice of added sugars, salts and of course chili. Prices are generally 10-15 baht per bag.
The larger fruit stall pictured is my local (Asoke Rd) selling 3 bags for 40 baht and include the more exotic white dragon fruit, purple dragon fruit and sweet mango.
