Buying jewelry in Bangkok requires a weighing of risk against price. While there are bargains to be found there are also scams. Unless knowledgeable in gems and handy with a loupe I suggest sticking to the more reputable malls or ISO dealers. Take only accredited GIA (or similar) certified gems.
Bangkok Gems Gallery (ISO 9001:2008)
This well oiled and profitable gem shop is “The World’s Biggest Jewelery Store”. While it has an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) you pay a premium for it. It is safe yet expensive. The “gallery” is often considered a tourist trap for jewelry in Bangkok as it is often forced as a stopover on cheap Bangkok tours. Nonetheless it is impressive and worth a visit on their offer of free pickup and drop off with no obligation to buy (contact at bottom of their website).
Chinatown Area
Swarming with gold and gem shops Chinatown can be the best place to find bargain jewelry in Bangkok. While many reputable dealers are in the area you will need confidence in what you are buying – so not for the beginners. Start your search at Yaowarat Road, found near Hua Lamphong underground MRT station.
Bangkok Gems Tower
Central to the trade of gems and jewelry in Bangkok is the Gems Tower in Silom. While primarily wholesale the first four floors offer retail, independent jewelry stores and accredited dealers. The Gems Tower is found at Charoen Krung Road (Silom 36) not far from Surasak Skytrain (BTS) Station.
Malls and Online Stores
Bangkok malls are littered with jewelry stores and many of the better have online and Facebook presences. Online stores are great for those with limited time and experience and allow price comparison before shopping for jewelry in Bangkok. Many offer similar prices to what you will find on a hunt in popular gem areas. One of the more popular online stores with easy to find shop location is Leela Gems (at MBK 2nd floor). For the exquisite try Ananta (Fine Jewelry).
