Getting There: Bangkok Train Station (Hua Lamphong) is easily found by taxi or the convenient MRT Subway line (Hua Lamphong subway station). It is located in the Old City area near Chinatown so give yourself 40 mins or so if travelling from central areas by taxi.
Arriving at the Bangkok Train Station there are ticketing areas, waiting areas, convenience stores and food courts. Train announcements are made on loud speakers in Thai. For non Thai speakers it is best to wait at the platform area with your train number. Ask stewards if necessary.
While trains in Thailand are the slowest form of transport they are also the safest and most comfortable. If travelling overnight 1st class and 2nd class sleepers are available. Check here for our experience of overnight 2nd class sleepers to Malaysia.
Booking: Full details on routes, schedules and booking are found on the State Railway of Thailand’s website at www.thairailticket.com. This covers domestic travel only. Bookings can also be made at the Bangkok train station.
Cross Border Booking: For cross border train journeys you should book in advance. You can do this at Bangkok train station (Hua Lamphong) or through their specified tour agents H.I.S Tours. There is an added 50 baht booking fee per ticket through H.I.S.
